Seperado: wild wild welsh

A few of us watched Seperado! at the weekend in the IFI - it's a movie made by Gruff from the Super Furry Animals. It documents his road trip around Argentina as he plays some shows and goes in search of a long lost Welsh cousin. Turns out a load of Welsh people emigrated there in the 1880s and there are whole towns with Welsh names and people speaking Welsh, which is kinda bizarre. It's a pleasure to watch as he drives about in amazing scenery, puts on shows to rooms of polite bemused locals while donning his power ranger helmet and generally acts as amazingly weird as usual. The soundtrack is full a bunch of his solo stuff too. Swoon.

If you are in any way of fan of SFA or Gruff (how can you not be?) I'd highly recommend checking this out.

I am becoming increasingly enamoured with GRUM, a scottish producer I came across by accident on Soundcloud - any remixes of his I've heard are ace (more below) and he has an album of his own stuff called Heartbeats out. This is "Through The Night" - the video is a pretty amusing depiction of an 80's style bromance between two cops and the tune is deadly - on a similar buzz to Chromeo's 'Don't Turn the Lights on' which is no bad thing. I heard Handsome Paddy talking about this at Kings of Concrete over the weekend, had to check it out. Pretty funny if a little old at this stage, but like I always say everything is new when you hear it first... or something. Bit of the back story: Weeshie Fogarty is a Kerry radio legend, up there with the great Patser McGonigle in terms of broadcast reach and wealth of inoffensive bantery titbits. He had a bit of a slip up on air when his producer went to a concert in the big smoke, Ireland's first son of DMC; Mek wasted no time in putting together this tribute.

Word to your moms: there is some awesome shiznit in the window of the Irish Cancer Society shop on Camden Street - the window is full of old Fleetwood Mac and Talking Heads LPs and musicy things - going on sale Saturday July 3rd. But continuing my policy of being mesmerised by weird Michael Jackson merchandise I saw an old school Bubbles the Chimp(ly Sailor) toy with a story and song cassette, available inside the shop. (All in its original packaging!)

It's 60 of your earth dollars so I sure as hell can't afford it but if any of you clowns purchase it I'd like to come round and listen to the sing along cassette with you and Bubbles. But not in a weird way. (definitely in a weird way...)

This wiki article on Michael and Bubbles is highly amusing; apparently Bubbles tried to top himself in 2003 but rest easy: Since the closure of Dunn's facility in 2004, Bubbles has been kept at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida, where he is said to enjoy painting and listening to flute music.

Came across this by accident the other day, it's another quality mix from Belgian duo Aeroplane. This one is for It's All Gone Pete Tong's Essential Mix and the 500th edition of. At first glance the track list didn't look up to much but then I clocked Les Rhythm Digitales - Sometimes on there (one of my fave songs ever), then I spotted the dub version of Don't You Want Me Baby I thought hang on there! Then I spotted Friendly Fires -Paris and thought 'well, well, well'. Finally when I saw this whopper by Goldfrapp I let out a Grrrr noise. None of the above come close to what I did when I actually heard this mix though - it really is a monster. Tron was on in the IFI as part of the current Jeff Bridges season - I hadn't seen it before - to my eternal shame - it is basically my ideal film. Jeff Bridges (young, dreamy) plays Flynn - a computer programming genius who got shanghaied by The Man (who stole all his rad computer game ideas) and wants to hack into The System to find the evidence. Unfortunately The System has other ideas and zaps Flynn into a computer gaming world where anthropomorphised computer programmes are pitted against each other gladiator stylee and Flynn and his friend Tron have to save the day. It is completely ridiculous and the graphics are amazing - particularly considering it was made in 1982. Definitely worth a look - especially as they are making a sequel called Tron Legacy due out in December and you want to be able to follow the plot, right?

Watch out for the 4-4 switch-up on the second drop' about his tune 'Short Bus.' It sounds made up to me - like when Dan Ashcroft pretends he knows about wine in Nathan Barley. However fortunately for the world people like DFRNT are making the music and not me - I don't know much about dubstep but I know I like this and will be checking out more of this guy:

Bike Love

I don't usually get personal on the blog but recent events have got me misty-eyed and wanting to share. I just got a new bike on Saturday, it's beautiful, smooth and sturdy; all the things I look for in a bike yet sadly, something is still rotten in the state of Danish roadsters. It took me a while to figure out where my feelings came from but I realized something last night and I reckon it's probably applicable to all sorts in life.

For years I was the proud owner of not one but two rather distinguished bi-peds. The first a 1920s' Joycean jobbie rescued from abandonment down the docklands on a Post Picnic session and dragged home for a fix up. The other, an inheritance from my cousin who was no doubt as well-served as I. She was probably a good thirty years old, spent more time with her chain off than on and didn't handle bumps well but if you knew how to treat her, she was never a chore. Both were tragically taken from me in their prime, I say prime because I don't think bikes ever really get too old for use, only moving on to their next life when they fall victim of theft, which is exactly what happened my lovely pair.

My new bike though beautiful, was a purchase, even though she came from an amazing home (rothar.ie) her lack of personal heritage and the fact that her presence serves a constant reminder of the untimely departure of her predecessors make her a bit of a sore point. I know this is terrible and I feel awful for even thinking it, I know if she could read this.. and had feelings she would be pretty hurt so I do feel guilty but can’t help my feelings.

I started writing this post as a tribute to my faithful departed, remembering the good times… the ride out to Seapoint for a swim, the mad dash from the Kraftwerk gig an hour earlier than needed due to botched 24hr clock reading (on my part), the constant record ferrying and the many backers. Instead in an unexpected turn all this reminiscing has started me thinking about the good times that lie ahead with my new steed. What capers will we get up to? Who will grace the backbar? How many punctures are in-store? That truly was unexpected and now I feel that perhaps the therapeutic writing of this coupled with the recent addition of a Kryptonite to the relationship will see a steadfast bond, in more ways than one.

J.D. Salinger died just over a week ago. Check out this amazing letter where he explains why he won't sell the rights to his 1951 novel The Catcher In The Rye, (which still sells 250,000 copies a year, 60 years on) about disillusioned teen Holden Caulfield.

"The weight of the book is in the narrator's voice, the non-stop peculiarities of it, his personal, extremely discriminating attitude to his reader-listener, his asides about gasoline rainbows in street puddles... he can't legitimately be separated from his own-first person technique. True, if the separation is forcibly made, there is enough material left over for something called an exciting (or maybe just interesting) evening in the theater. But I find that idea, if not odious, at least odious enough to stop me from selling the rights."

I gather there was some mystery at first as to who Oni Ayhun was, but it transpires it is the guy from The Knife - Olof Dreijer. This tune OAR 003-B was released last year but if you haven't heard it yet get your ears ready - it's beautiful but at the same time makes you want to hear it REALLY loud in a club - in short, it's savage.

Another reworking by The Revenge - I listened to his mix of Sister Sledge's 'Lost in Music' (that Chewy posted here) a lot last year and I've already listened to this one of 'Just Be Good To Me' a lot too. That song is originally by The SOS Band but I only know it from Beats International's version 'Dub Be Good To Me' from 1990. Star Quality was an English 80s game/talent (ahem) show hosted by Gyles Brandreth (remember him? you will) and an Amazonian named Beverly. They only made 6 episodes and you can see why - although there is a pretty outstanding Thriller impression about 4 mins into it:

I saw that video on Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe - Brooker is hilarious -and not just for co-writing Nathan Barley (http://www.trashbat.co.ck/) with Chris Morris. Although any excuse to post it - Embedding is disabled but check out Nathan Barley's Sex Rap- you could learn a few sweet moves. And some kindly youtube user collected all the episodes of Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe in a playlist for you to peruse if you so desire. Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours if you get snowed in. Or really lazy.

Omar! Is that you?

Even I know The Wire is the best thing ever. And that Omar is also the best thing ever. The only video I could find with Omar that didn't have some kind of spoilers in it was this montage which is initially amusing but turns out to be quite mesmerising and does somewhat capture him:

So kudos to the actor Michael K. Williams for being so amazing. And DOUBLE kudos to him for ALSO starring as James the cop in R.Kelly's supreme hip-hopera opus Trapped in the Closet. Yes, remember that little gem?! James the cop is going out with a lady called Bridget who is having an affair with a midget (R.Kelly's got mad rhyming skillz) - and if you don't remember it or haven't seen it - behold it in all its dramatic majesty:

According to his wiki page, Michael K. Williams got his awesome facial scar in a fight on his 25th birthday, which would have been in 1991. I know it's kind of fuzzy but it doesn't look like he has the scar in the R.Kelly video which was produced in 2005. What gives, internet? I'm not even going to consider the possibility wikipedia isn't made of 100 per cent true science facts because my whole belief system would crumble. The mystery just makes me more enamoured.

Up until very recently if you had said the name Bobby McFerrin to me I would have thought of that 80s 'Don't Worry, Be Happy' tune, and not very favourably at that probably. But a friend sent me the following video of a talk he did at a science (stay with me now) fair last year and as Hansel would say it changed my whole perspective on shit: check it out, it's so good:

So it turns out Bobby McFerrin is a musical legend - his parents were classical singers and he has won 10 grammys and did the theme for The Cosby Show (season 4) and he's a world famous conductor and has his own vocal orchestra and is currently writing an opera among other things. It's great to see Sigur Rós happy - I saw them live in Melbourne 2 years ago and they had clearly been co-erced into a live questions and answers with the audience after the show and it was like watching kittens being tortured. Amazing icelandic singing kittens who should never have to do anything they don't want to do. The Hasbeens have a new track out - You and Me - It is quite low key and dark - exactly like the video. Not that much happens but it is very cool and strangely compelling - it is seedy in a kind of glamorous way if that's possible. I don't know much about The Hasbeens - they are dutch and only have 3 or 4 records out on Clone. I listened to their track 'Make the World Go Away' continuously through 2007/2008 (check it out below) and love the sound of the new one - very cool electro synth.

Space is a french electro space disco band from Marseilles that were around in the late 70s. They wore space suits on stage so even before I heard the music I thought I might be onto a good thing. They sold over 10 million records back in the day and their stuff is being re-released on Nang Records. You can download 'Carry On, Turn Me On' remixed by Architeq here (YSI). I'm a big Lindstrom fan so it's great to hear some old school space disco.

I noticed too that the cover of the album above looks really like a part of Flight of the Conchords' video for Bowie In Space. Yes that is a nerdy thing to notice but it gives me an excuse to post this video:

It's called 'Are You Sensation' by a group called Tigercity and I LOVE it. - it's kind of Halls and Oatsey with a bit of Chromeo mixed in so what's not to love? 'Are You Sensation' is from a 2008 E.P called Pretend not to Love. It's very happy and very catchy and very sing a longy which is all good - as long as no one can hear me. Tigercity are an electro - funk band originally from Massachusetts now living in Brooklyn and you should check 'em out.

Pan's People were a troupe of lovely ladies who danced on Top of the Pops in the 70s when the artist couldn't make a live appearance - before music videos took over. This is pretty exciting stuff and another great coup for Dublin’s dancehall/reggae scene which just saw another legend in the shape of David Rodigan play the Sugar Club to a full house and Chaka Demus & Pliers drop by the Button Factory a couple of weeks ago. Back to the future though… and November 12th is the day to catch the most famous albino rudebwoi you are ever likely to meet. A proper legend of the scene, here is what happened last time he was here:

Worries Outernational are teh chaps behind this gig, bringing him over to their Dancehall Styles night, which has been running every Sunday for over 5 years, quietly surviving recessions, archaic licensing laws and that lazy Sunday feeling a lot of us get to bring a consistently good party week in week out. A Dancehall night may be one of the less obvious club choices for a lot of people, but if it wasn’t for these guys there would literally be nothing to do on a Sunday, the fact that they are still going is testament to their hard work and high standards. They have just started a new night in 'Le Cirk' Dame St too, strictly reggae this one (no dancehall). Go down and show some support for one of the city’s finest outfits.

Nujabes is a Japanese hip hop producer and DJ - this tune is called アホな走り集 - what? You can't read that? Peasant. It's called Luv (sic) pt. 2 featuring Shing02 - It's a sweet tune. But even if you're not into hip hop you should check out the video - a load of Japanese mentalists all giving it socks. And if you're not into that then just fast forward to 3.45 to see a really really fat Japanese guy comin'atcha in slow motion. It's mesmerising. And if you're not into that, then there's no pleasing you.

Parra and Le Le - where the hoes at?

Great animated video for Le Le's tune Breakfast by Amsterdam illustrator Parra. The song is pretty addictive too - when I first heard it I thought it was silly but now I can't get enough of it:

More public child hygiene safety announcements from Yo! Gabba Gabba - First we had Chromeo's 'Nice n Clean' all about washing your hands - now it's Of Montreal's song about brushing your teeth, complete with super cute animated video by Kangaroo Alliance. Of Montreal are an American indie band from Georgia but their music is a lot cooler than the phrase 'American indie band from Georgia' might suggest. Unfortunately I can't embed the video as Yo! Gabba Gabba won't allow it (which is ridiculous as all their other videos are all over the interwebs) but I highly recommend you check this out:

If you liked that, here is another song of theirs (also animated by Kangaroo Alliance) - don't let the title 'Wraith Pined to the Mist' put you off - it's actually a happy song. Although with these indie bands you never know - the video does involve various cute little guys meeting various ends so maybe I'm missing something.

Rainy Day Review: H.O.S.H

H.O.S.H is a german minimal/ house/ techno DJ and producer and I don't know anything about him (or minimal, or house, or techno for that matter) but some of his tracks are amazing. If you like your beats slick and somewhat filthy (perfect for a rainy day) you should check these out.

This one White Elephant is from 2007 - this video is pants but you can check out the tune and see if it's up your street before downloading it.

This next tune is called The Valve, and as Chewy would say, it's so far UP my street I'm surprised it's not in my front room havin' a cup of tea with my nan:

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are playing The Button Factory this Saturday October 24th as part of DEAF- they played here a bunch of times last year and I managed to miss every show. They even played twice at the Electric Picnic and I missed both of those shows too -but the less said about that the better. I am determined to make it on Saturday - check em out:

The Impossible Project - Polaroid returns!

When Polaroid declared they would be leaving the instant film racket, Dr. Florian Kaps, business man, artist, Austrian and Polaroid enthusiast decided to do something about it. He had already set up polanoid.net - an online gallery and Polanoir - the first ever Polaroid-only gallery in Vienna so it probably made sense for him to get a few heads together and buy all the instant film production equipment from Polaroid (for a cool 100 million euro.) He calls it The Impossible Project and the aim is to re-open the factories and develop a new type of instant film for the vintage cameras.

Fast forward a year and now there will be a collaboration in 2010: Polaroid will re-launch the Polaroid One-Step camera (pictured above) and have commissioned The Impossible Project to make the film for it. It looks really easy:
