Get Mad Again This Wednesday

Massive gig this Wednesday in the Button Factory with South Rakkas Crew making their Irish debut down at Tetric. SRC's recent EP on Diplo's Mad Decent was a huge crossover hit, with remixes by Fake Blood, DJ Sega and Jokers of The Scene. The fact that SRC predominantly make dancehall is another telling sign of the cross pollination of club music. (Leave it up to Diplo to get things mad) This gig is definitly one for the Hip Hop boys just as much as the electro heads.
I first heard of the Rakkas Crew when I picked up Switch's Lilly Allen LDN 12" mix and found their delightful 'Crack Whore Riddim' on the flip. I still play out the 'Crack Whore' mix regularly but have since added Mad Again to my repertoire. Emynd's mix still adds maximum float to my boat with it's old school piano chords and cheeky break before the final chorus.
I have been tasked with the warm up and haven't been as excited about a gig in a long time. SRC will bring something fresh to Dublin, get down on Wednesday to catch a piece and you can declare to prefer their earlier stuff next summer when your mates all catch on.

In Flagranti meet Arveene and Misk

Exclusive one right here, forthcoming on the Kitsune label it's Arveene and Misk's mix of In Flagranti's Business Acumen. The boys have done a fantastic job on this adding a new dimension to an already great track with a wah guitar loop and soaring synth line, funking up the track good and propper and beefing up the breakdown no end too.
Kitsune seemed to loose a bit of steam with their last two Maison compilations, getting lost in blur of distorted electro. The new Maison compilation is due out on October 27th and is billed as 'the melodic one' so it seems they know what needs to be done. A few more releases like this should help get them back on course.

Don Rimini in Dublin tonight...

French electro star Don Rimini is playing Tetric at the Button Factory tonight. Dublin electro fans should catch this master of the genre while he is in town to see how it should be done. The Tetric lads have shown again with this booking why they are gaining reputation as the best mid-week club in the city. To top it off it's only a measly €8 in too so stop your whining and get on it!

ClimaXXX Djs have been asked down to Andrews Lane next Tuesday for the launch of Trashed! with Trev Radiator. Also playing on the night are Drag Queen Bingo and Dave O'Reilly.
If you find yourself out on a Friday drop in for a boogie, there are cheap drinks a plenty including €3 Coronas which will no doubt have disastrous consequences for my hectic Wednesday morning schedule.

Champeta de Colimbia

Regular readers will know that if there are two things climaXXX loves, they are discovering new musical genres and... booty.
So imagine our delight when we came across this video entitled El Agua Champeta. I am not sure who the artist is but after a bit of research I found out the style is called Champeta and comes form the Cartagena de Indias region of Columbia where a lot of escaped African slaves settled during the colonisation of the Americas by the Spanish. You can certainly hear very traditional African elements in many of the songs as well as other local influences such as reggaeton, dancehall and even a bit of baile funk.

Nite Version Vs Night Version

Soulwax have come up trumps again with this Nite Version* of MGMT's Kids. There have been loads of dodgy copies of this remix floating around the blogs recently, some hairy live rips which sound like they came off a mobile phone and some slightly better (camera?) ones too. Well this is about the best one I have heard, typical Soulwax affair with the custom synths and chopping all used to nice affect. Get it into ya!
MGMT - Kids (Soulwax Nite Version)

*Originaly coined in the 80's when Duran Duran decided to record extended versions of their songs with the dancefloor in mind, Night Versions are extended versions of tracks usually with longer intros and instumentals intended for playing in night clubs. Soulwax paid homage to this with their Nite Versions album in 2005.
Check out the awesome Girls on Film Night Version, included in a 2003 Erol Alkan Muzik Mag CD, Erol was apparently inundated with people asking whose remix it was (assuming it was his own edit) when it was in actual fact released on the original 12" in 1981.
Still sounds fresh today.

From the Balkans to Bavaria in just two posts!

More B(r)ass!

We head north now to the land of fine moustaches and beer that is Bavaria and a remix of a track by everyones favourite Bavarian brass band G.Rag und die Landlergschwister, see how it just rolls off the tounge. The remix is by schlachthofbronx from Germany who are stacking up a nice selection of original sounding work covering styles like Kuduro, Dubstep and that Badman sound so popular with MDC and co. Which is exactly what you need to be doing to break it in this crazy club world nowadays, there are far too many distorted electro outfits still doing the rounds 2 years after Justice peaked. It's chaps like schlachthofbronx who are thinking ahead here and embracing new sounds and I think are going to reap the rewards.

This M.C. Shoots No Blanks

Although she hails from Philly, Amanda Blank is knee-deep in the Baltimore club scene and since this rap-chick extraordinaire turned up a couple of years back she has been busting out rhymes with heaps of climaXXX favourites - Spank Rock, M.I.A, Santogold, Teki Latex (of TTC fame) and soon Uffie. I don't normally have the hots for chicks but with lyrics like 'my rhymes are painfully fresh... my pussy's tasting the best'...well, just, it gets a gal wondering - her rhymes are painfully fresh...and she ain't too hard on the old eyeballs either.

In addition to her dirty rapping, she is lead singer of indie pop band Sweatheart. Check out their Finger Bangin' video below - nearly as good as the South Park boys' cracker of a song. She's signed to Downtown Records so don't be surprised if she collaborates with fellow signees such as Kid Sister (yes please), Justice (yes please) and eh....Sarkozy's missus - Carla Bruni (hmmmmm). Grace Jones:
This genre-jumper has released ten studio albums since 1977 dipping her androgynous toes into disco, funk, electronica and more. Grace Jones, who was at one stage Warhol's muse, is about as iconoclastic as they come. If you're old enough to know who Miss Jones is you are old enough to know that she shouldn't be missed.



Chewy:
Our boy Chewy will be pleasing the masses in Fossett's with a Pyjama Party from 11pm-3am on Friday night/Saturday morning. He'll be keeping it dance-floor friendly with a mix of disco and all time favourites from the 80s and 90s. Think Sweet Valley High sleepover meets eurotrash discotheque...in a circus.

Late of The Pier:
I was lucky enough to catch Late of the Pier a few months back in the POD. They are one of those rare bands that I found myself having a bop and singing along to when I'd never heard their stuff before. Their anything-goes sound is getting lots of hype and rightly so. Having Erol Alkan as your producer int gonna hurt neither. Their slot should be aces.

The Dying Seconds:
If The Dying Seconds' performance at Castle Palooza was anything to go by, their set at the picnic should be a stormer. Lots of bloggers have been giving them their propers and they've been compared to the likes of Arcade Fire and Death Cab for Cutie. I prefer to think of them as the bastard child of Elbow and Kraftwerk – you've got to hear it to believe it. This lot are such crackers they've been given two slots...check them out in the Pop Baby tent at 11pm on Friday and 11.30pm on Saturday.
The Dying Seconds - Feist Remix

Yacht:
Thems in the know (LCD Soundsystem, Architecture in Helsinki, Vampire Weekend...) have been scrambling over each other to get Yacht to tour with them and recently Vibe Magazine called the band indie rock's Timbaland. Yacht head honcho Jona Bechtolt describes the band as an amalgamation of self-taught dance moves and anthemic electro-power jams all played backwards and covered in cherry cola. What more could we ask for? Don't miss the boat on this one.



Toddla T:
This Sheffield youngfella has been getting up to all sorts of late - producing tracks for Roots Manuva, remixing Hot Chip and helping two climaXXX favourites Sinden and Switch fill the floor at Fabric, not to mention making top tracks of his own. He'll be playing the Twisted Pepper Arena in the Bodytonic Village on Friday night with a live MC. If you want to get your weekend off to one helluva start with a pleasure from the bass genre-mash then Toddla's your kid.

Sonic 86 - Bass in yo Face!

It's always nice to help break a new act, especially when it's an act as fresh sounding as these fellas. It's also a bonus when you have the pleasure of knowing and playing alongside them from time to time. Sonic 86 are two Dublin based DJs and producers that fit all of the above criteria and some. Part of a new wave of talent that has a full understanding of how the current club/blog climate works and where it seems to be heading too, they have embraced genres from the past like ghetto tech and techno and mixed them with current trends like the BadMan Bass sound favored by Herve and co. to create a new style that as yet has no name (see the Egyptrixx post for another good example).
The lads mention acts like Drop The Lime, Detboi, Egyptrixx and Drums of Death as acts 'killin it' right now, that will give you some indication of the sound they are pushing. Or you could just download the tracks and break out the Bassbins.

Stonewax - - - - >

I came across this track on the Soulwax myspace the other day when doing up the Day in The Life post, then Headman finished off with it last Friday at Spy and hearing it on the Function One confirmed my initial thought of 'my remix of the year'. The track is a nice slow groove that stays true to the original vocals adding just a typical Soulwax analogue synth line and some chopped guitars.
Sublime stuff.

Electric Picnic Preview #1

Over the next two weeks we will be giving a brief introduction to some of the acts we will be checking out at this years EP. Not much room to go in to detail here so just a couple of tracks and videos of our main highlights really.

First up,
Modeselektor: Bodytonic Main Stage, Sunday.
A live set from the German duo, their show in the Tivoli earlier this year is still talked about with fondly. Expect everything from dub step to pounding techno and a sprinkle of champagne.

Jape: Somewhere on the Friday.
Local hero Richie Egan will no doubt draw a huge crowd. Played Glastonbury earlier this year and just released his Ritual album. DO NOT miss Floating sung to/by the large home crowd.

Well deserved 4 hour set for the Nordic twosome. Excellent move from Bodytonic to get them down for an extendo-set. Cosmic disco that will start easy and no doubt culminate in hedonistic twisted disco madness.

Hijack in McGruders

Automated Music have been plugging away up in McGruders for some time now bringing over some of the biggest names in the UK jackin' house scene, Duke Dumont, Lee Mortimer and The Bulgarian to date. Well the lads are showing no signs of slowing down this weekend with a visit from Hijack to look forward to. Hijack has had loads of releases on Jack Union, On The Brink and Potty Mouth Music all along the bouncey bumpin lines that be tearing up the clubs right now.

Egytian Lover

Like so much of the music igniting the blog and club scene right now it's hard to define what kind of music Egyptrixx makes. One theme is common throughout though, Bass and lots of it. Talking to the man, he told me how he has always been completely addicted to the stuff and in particular, sub-bass (those kicks you feel in your chest) as he prefers to feel the music then to simply hear it. On that note, don't bother listening to these tracks through the laptop speakers, take em' home and crank that woofer up to 11.
Egyptrixx hails from Toronto and has been making music in one form or another since he was 5. He is signed to Wide Records in London and has a new EP scheduled for the Autumn. Keep an eye on the myspace for more tracks and tour dates.

Melt Festival Mini Mix - DJ Beware

Found this mix by DJ Beware over on Mad Decent. It's 33 minutes of Baile inspired Ball Busters with loads of familiar samples and melodies thrown in (check out the Nirvana and Yazoo riffs).
Just looking through the track list will give you an idea of the kerazzy sh!t going on, bootlegs, mashups and loads of exclusive edits. Emynd and New Orleans Bounce

This dude has really caught our eye recently, his 'More on the Floor' remix of South Rakkas Crew 'Mad Again' has been getting lots of airtime (I think I opened and closed with it recently) and his Cross Faded Bacon Blog has become a firm CLIMAXXX favourite, chockers full of free remixes and sets to whet the whistle.
The man himself is from Philly and and is a purveyor of Bmore, New Orleans Bounce, Bootlegs and Club music. If you are unfamiliar with New Orleans Bounce (we were) it originated sometime in the early 90s and is fairly unique to the New Orleans area, Emynd got into it a couple of years ago and has been championing it since. He is doing a pretty good job of it to I would say, having just dropped an hour long mix of the stuff for the Mad Decent Podcast series. The man has also been dolling out free blends too, all of which can be found on his blog along with mixes and upcoming gigs (all in the US unfortunatly for us). Keep an eye on this fella, in a world full of blog fodder, he is definitly doing something fresh. Big props too for introducing many to the Bounce.

Sinden Makes it Good on Shilo

Another CLIMAXXX favourite Sinden has turned out this fine mix of upcoming and unreleased tracks for Shilo's We Make It Good series. Loads of the usual suspects are featured, Herve, Detboi, Machines Dont Care and there is a couple of 'not so well known yets' too from Rude Kid and Lava Unit. It's a nice taster of upcoming fidget-y numbers and adds another fine addition to the Shilo mix series.

It features acts like Rye Rye, Para One, Roisín Murphy, Surkin and Soft Tigers and is full of modern day summer jams like the Black Kids 'I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance' alongside some original synth classics like Juniors 'Do You Really Want My Love'. Basically lots of good-time summer numbers!
Shortie was raised on a hip-hop diet and was a bit of a late comer to the electro-ghetto scene. He's doing all right so far though with a 4 hour stint at POGO tomorrow night as well as slots at Oxygen and Electric Picnic to look forward too.

Detboi, Midfield General and Arveene

The Clampdown boys keep up the pace this week with one of our favourite artists right now Detboi dropping by to show us what he got. It's a tough call to fill a place like Andrews Lane every week but Johnny Moy and Arveene are doing just that, calling on acts like Hot Chip, Rory Phillips and James Lavele to help them out. Next month the lads are throwing a DFA party featuring Juan McLean and Nancy Whang on the 26th, deffo one to put in the dear diary. Back to this week though, as regular readers will know, Detboi is a local hero to us, he represents Dublin on the Big Bass Scene, rubbing shoulders and pushing faders with Herve, Sinden and the rest of the crew at Machines Don't Care -album out on July 7th!-More on that here and taster here:
