Michael Jackson 29.08.58 - 25.06.09

So there's millions of incredible MJ videos out there but here are 2 of my favourite live ones- the first is Smooth Criminal - live in Munich in 1997 - on the Dangerous Tour.
The second is Man in the Mirror - live at the Grammys in 1988.
Just 2 examples of his genius.

xxxchange in Dublin...
I will be doing some warming of the crowd this Saturday down at Transmission, before one XXXchange. A bit of a hero round a lot of parts, probably best known for his work with Spank Rock and his awesome remix work (hows about that Les Artistes remix), XXXchange has also produced albums for The Kills, Kid Sister and Amanda Blank. With associations like that it's easy to see why the boy is so damn popular.
I shall be on from before midnight till about 1 and am planning all sorts of ill shit. If you fancy a spot on the G-list hit me up here and I will do my best.

Mos Def's Music Tee: The Ecstatic
Mos Def's lastest album The Ecstatic will be the first full album to be released in tee shirt form. Thankfully nothing like the wearable instrument shirt - (yes it is a real thing) - there's a picture of the album cover on the front, the tracklist on the back, and a hang-tag with a code to download it in MP3 format. Just for the record the tee shirt will look like the picture below and not the one I fashioned above. (sorry)
A collaboration between fashion/music company Invisible DJ and Californian fashion label LnA - Mos Def's tee shirt album retails at €39 - pretty pricey considering you can buy the album for about €9 on Amazon etc. So the ever increasing crossover between fashion and music plays its part in the struggle to find new ways to get people to pay for music. Just like the circle of life but with tee shirts instead of lions.
You can check out some of the new tracks and buy the album on Mos Def's myspace.

Retro review: The Low End Theory from A Tribe Called Quest

This just in - 18 years ago!
While perusing the interwebs recently I came across mention of A Tribe Called Quest's second album - The Low End Theory - from 1991. God knows what I was listening to in 1991- Color Me Badd probably, or worse - but that's no excuse for how I let the last 18 years go by without even knowing this album existed. The general consensus on the internet is that this is a seminal album that helped define hip hop as a blah blah blah - and influenced every future hip hop artist ever. And if that's not good enough for you it is on a bunch of top 100 album lists. Hmm. I was dubious.
Well, it turns out for once the interweb is right! Q-Tip's flow is mesmerising - I could listen to him all day . He and Phife Dawg play off each other and the lyrics are in turn funny, smart and thought provoking; the album touches the topics of getting screwed by record companies, date rape and the trappings of fame. I am pretty happy I got it even if it was 18 years late.
Tune in next week for my review of a movie you may not have heard about yet - where a bunch of crazy guys go around New York capturing ghosts - with hilarious results!!
You can listen to one of Q-Tip's songs "What?" here:

Major Lazer album up
The new Major Lazer album just went up on the myspace. You can listen to all the tracks right there which is super awesome, perhaps more awesome is the Twitter feed they have rolling in. It's full of the most badass rudeboy speak mi evah seen. Gems like this -
"big risspeck to mi bedrin dem dung ah trini, video wikkid to bloodcleet "
If you still aint sure who Major Lazer are, check out the previous climaXXX posts on them here.

Everything's better with Zombies!
"Mr. Bennet went about his morning business of dagger sharpening and musket polishing - for attacks by the unmentionables had grown alarmingly frequent in recent weeks. "
I admit: I've never read Pride and Prejudice - no surprises there. But I did watch about 10 minutes of the film with Colin Firth (yuck) once by accident so I know what's going on. Also, I've seen Clueless. It's a classic tale of class divide, love, pride and eh... prejudice, right? Imagine how much better that would be with zombies? Yes, I ask that about many things and I know ( now ) in real life zombies would probably be a bad thing. But here is concrete example of their appeal: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - a world-renowned piece of boring ol' literature made accessible and interesting by the addition of HORDES OF THE UNDEAD.
I haven't read it yet - it's on its way - but I really hope a zombie falls in love. They're people too you know.
You can buy the book on amazon here.
P.S The day after posting this I was kindly informed by a much more learned friend of mine, Matt, that the movie Clueless is in fact based on Jane Austen's novel Emma, not Pride and Prejudice. Boy, is my face red! I shall now attempt to mask my shame by suggesting that perhaps the movie Clueless is another example where the addition of a few rogue zombies might have drastically improved viewing pleasure. Am I right?! I'm right, amn't I? In your face, Matt!

Dope Shit next weekend
I don't often use words like 'dope' unless talking about politicians or people who wear keffiyehs, but this is a Diplo gig I am talking about so I thought it suitable. Yes that's right, Diplo is back. After tearing the arse out of the Bodytonic Tent at last years EP he has been busy working on his side project with Switch, Major Lazer (as reported here) but obviously keeping a hand in the old DJ-ing too. He joins us this time as part of the Mad Decent Soundsystem with Fake Blood and Boy 8 Bit.
The POD have really pulled together a great line-up for this, also on the bill are Skream, Arveene & Misk, Rusko and just added, Tiefschwarz.
Whopper like no other I think you will agree. It's spread out over a few floors too which means lots of running around in a big hairy mess... for me anyway.
I have a few passes for this wondrous event for you lucky readers too, just drop me a mail and my magic budgie will choose a winner at random. onechewlove(AT)gmail.com

Lather Up! - Chromeo on Yo Gabba Gabba
Guest Post from KT80
I could easily lament the fact that I'm not 6 and they didn't make shows like Yo Gabba Gabba when I was a chisler and I don't get to watch Chromeo rocking out on afterschool tv. But it turns out 6 year olds are stupid kids who don't even know or care who Chromeo are and probably just think they are a couple of dorks telling them to wash their hands. When we know the real truth: adults never wash their hands and Chromeo are amazing. When I was 6 and Sesame Street and the Muppet Show had the biggest celebrities in the world on - did I care that Richard Pryor or Ray Charles were reading me my alphabet? Hell no, all I cared about was Kermit's Newsflash, just like the kids watching Yo Gabba are screaming 'Screw these OCD clean freaks, send out the dancing monster with the long stripey arms!' But hey, we're all happy. Especially the (not at all creepy) guy at the end of the clip trying to hypnotise kids into staying tuned!
P.S if anyone has an mp3 of the lather up song ( Dave1 I'm talking to you) please send it to me c/o Climaxxx.

Lets Make Party
I have only had the pleasure of seeing Mikki Dee a couple of times thus far but his technical skills and nice broad tune selection stuck in my mind. His latest mixtape, 1,2,3 Go! can testify to this, he dropped me a copy a few weeks ago and it has raised more than a few ear holes since. He will be starting his new clubnight in the Village this Friday with a bit of support from Mystro, Arveene and JB the Deejay. It will be a special AV set of which reports are pretty astounding. Free before 10pm, €8 after.
He will have a few copies of the mixtape to give away on the night, if you can't make it but want one anyways, drop me a mail and I will try hook you up.

More At-At Awesomeness
As I already said, I was a big At-At fan so when I saw this badboy over on gizmodo I did very much covet. Looks like it only has a tape-deck though, would probably have to work one of those car-tape-deck-converters up on it.14.4.09
Fun With Pie-Charts
Graphs were one of my favourite things in school. Them and lunch. Some people are still having fun with them, in fact there is a whole site dedicated to fun with graphs, its called graph-jam. If the name isn't hip and urban enough for you, wait till you see some of the whacky stuff on there! This is one of my faves right now, it shoud give you a little taster of the madcap stuff people come up with... mad I tell you.

Twisted
I was trying to hunt down a Twister bed spread the other day when I happened across this almost-as-fun Twister beach towel. Once I finished imagining the possibilities of such a wonderous invention, a few things in the ad grabbed by attention.... not in a good way either.
#1-the dodgy photoshoped-in beech scene.
#2- the unusual choice of models, you would think a hot bathing-suit clad couple would be more appealing to all.
#3- the socks on both these 'geezers'. What was wrong with that mans feet that black socks were a better option?
All this image brings to mind are the words 'Oi Oi' and a dodgy sky-one show starring Julian Clarey. Grim.

Bank Holiday Zombie Fun
The Zombie Disco Squad drop by The Underground this Sunday. They play power punching electro numbers, usually influenced by Po-Co sounds like Baile and African stuff, they add that MachinesDon'tCare edge with the hopping basslines (I still can't bring myself to use the term fidg£t). I heard my hero Claude Von Stroke talk about them on some radio show, he was a big fan but ultimately Jesse Rose signed them to his Made to Play label. They also released on Man Recordings (see Po-Co reference) and Dirty Bird (see CVS reference.) You could do a lot worse this weekend.

I Want One...
One of George Lucas's latest Star Wars money makers is afloat. Never one to miss the boat, he has cornered the lucrative 'creepy kid and dingy' market. Good to see he is still finding ways to cash in on the franchise, fortunately for us, the kids don't actually come with the his latest wonders, a range of pool inflatables including blow-up tie and x-wing fighters and some kick-ass kites.
The lowdown
Child not included
A water cannon! If only they had such things when I was a lad... I guess I will make do with the R2 floating drinks server, with accessories like these I am sure friends with pools are only around the corner.

What's That Sound
I was 19 when I first heard Les Rhythmes Digitales Darkdancer, the same age Stewart Price or Jacques lu Cont was when he made it. I remember being very moved by this and can safely say this was the first album I ever loved - and you really do never forget your first.
Sometimes is still one of my favourite songs ever, Nik Kershaw does the vocal, he is also responsible for another one of my favourite songs 'Wouldn't It Be Good', imagine being 19 and getting Nik Kershaw to sing on your album, what a ledge.
I met JLC a few times through the years, he promised me a copy of Darkdancer on vinyl on our first meet and again on our second ,then one day he came through and a lovely limited edition picture disk arrived in the post. I had almost given up too, telling youngfellas never to meet their idols and such, I soon took it all back though. Mr Price has come a long way even since then, producing Madonna tours and album as well as an album for The Killers he has tonnes of remixes and productions ubder his belt under the guise of The Thin White Duke, Zoot Woman, JLC, Man With Guitar and Paper Faces and now I see he is producing for Frankmusik too. I don't use the term genius often but this man is as close as many get.
I found these old Darkdancer vids the other day that reminded me of all this, hope you enjoy as much as I did. (Sadly he had ditched the red do when I met him)
